Disaster Relief
After Katrina struck the Gulf Coast with such devastating effects, Covenant members formed a team to respond under the Presbyterian organization. Collections were taken and members were sent to rebuild communities. In 2009 another team from Covenant will be providing relief assistance for those in Texas who suffered from Hurricane Rita. Most recently members of our congregation responded to the call for volunteers for Joplin Missouri.
As one of our members wrote
I have never seen such devastation.
As I drove through Joplin, everything was normal, then . . . there was nothing. Houses, trees, simply everything, was gone. It was as if the hand of God swept one third of the city off the earth. Even the hospital was moved off its foundation, and has to be torn down. Schools were shattered. 18,000 cars were destroyed. We found huge roll-off dumpsters imbedded in second stories of buildings and in trees. Parts of shredded cars were in the trees amongst more debris of undetermined origin. People had a few minutes to find cover. Then literally minutes later all they had was what they were wearing. Winds exceeded 300 mph!
Approximately 2000 of the 8000+ homes destroyed were uninsured. Volunteers are critical to Joplin's rebuilding. To rebuild these homes in the next 5 years, Joplin needs 900 volunteers per day on the ground.
The need is great, the cause is good, and America is responding.
